EMDR Therapy
How Eye Movements Facilitate Healing
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy has been demonstrated by peer reviewed research to be one of the fastest and most gentle methods of healing traumatic stress, anxiety, and associated depression. It has been demonstrated to help heal complicated grief, eating disorders, performance anxiety, Treatment as usual (TAU) methods can take months or years to facilitate healing from traumatic experiences. EMDR therapy can help heal trauma, anxiety, or complicated grief in only a few sessions, and usually without the severe distress experienced with other interventions. While the exact mechanism that drives the effectiveness is still debated, what is certain is that bilateral brain stimulation definitely plays a significant role. This bilateral stimulation can be facilitated with eye movements, tapping, tactile stimulators, or auditory tones. BLS alternately stimulates both hemispheres of the brain, while holding a traumatic memory. This normally results in a lowered reactivity and a less distressing memory.

Since its conception, researchers and clinicians have developed EMDR protocols for addiction, grief, eating disorders, and chronic pain management. Each protocol has commonalities and are applicable across a wide range of issues.
